Global LNG exports slightly up in March

Global liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports reached around 30.4 million tonnes in March--a slight drop compared to 30.8 Mt shipped a year earlier, Kallanish Energy reports.

According to Kaleem Asghar, director of LNG analytics at ClipperData, LNG exports in North America were up 80% year-on-year to 4.6 Mt last month. These volumes were also up 200,000 tonnes compared with February’s exports.

Most of March’s exports left the Arab Gulf region. The Qatar-led shipments totaled 8 Mt – up from 7.7 Mt in March 2019 and 7.8 Mt in February.

The Asia-Pacific region exported about 7.5 Mt of LNG, which is a 10% increase y-o-y and roughly 800,000 tonnes more than it did a month earlier.

Northern Russia loaded 1.7 Mt last month, compared with 100,000 tonnes in March 2019. The region, where the Yamal LNG project operates, also saw an increase of 100,000 tonnes compared with exports in February.

The ClipperData analysis showed that 24 vessels left the Yamal LNG project, with nine tankers arriving at Belgium’s Zeebrugge port and three at Norway’s Honningsvag STS point. The remaining exports include: seven to France, two to Spain, two to Netherlands and one to UK.

In terms of import flows, Asghar estimated that 32.7 Mt of LNG arrived on 519 vessels in terminals around the world last month. This is a 7.21% increase over the 30.5 Mt in March 2019.

East Asia took in 16.5 Mt of the supercooled fuel – an increase of 5.09% y-o-y, while South Asia saw a 7% rise y-o-y to 3.3 Mt.
