Baker Hughes: US rig count unchanged at 254

The US drilling rig count remains unchanged at 254 rigs working for the week ended Aug. 28, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is down 650 units from the 904 rigs working this time a year ago.

The number of rigs drilling on land was unchanged week-over-week with a total of 240 units. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters was unchanged at 1 unit for the week. The number of rigs drilling offshore was unchanged at 13.

US oil-directed rigs decreased by 3 from last week to reach 180 units. This time a year ago, 742 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas increased by 3 units to reach 72 rigs, 90 fewer than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.

The only state among the major oil and gas-producing states to see an increase this week was Louisiana. With a 2-unit increase, the state ended the week with 34 working rigs.

Texas and New Mexico each dropped a single rig to reach 107 and 46 rigs running, respectively.

Ten states remained unchanged this week, namely Pennsylvania, 18; Oklahoma, 11; West Virginia, 8; North Dakota, 10; Ohio, 5; Colorado, 5; California, 4; Alaska, 3; Wyoming, 1; and Utah, 0.

Canada’s rig count decreased by 2 rigs for the week. At 54 rigs, the count is 96 fewer than the 150 units drilling this week a year ago. With 19 rigs drilling, Canada’s oil-directed rigs decreased by a single unit for the week. Gas-directed rigs in Canada also decreased by a single unit to reach 35.
